word of the day is haggle

We haggled with the Holiday Inn in Vancouver and ended up getting 1 night free. Saving $180!! We are in Whistler and chilling tonight. We saw Jeff Kerkove and his mom arrive at the Westin Resort, this place rocks! I need to download local access numbers so I'll update more later.

Damn, Scott's pentium 2 laptop is slow!!

Roxy

Today (Monday) we went on an epic ride to The Deep Cove bike shop. We also partied at the Cambie and Roxy clubs. Scott is looking forward to having a cocktail or 2 after the race. Looking forward to seeing Whistler later today after we sleep for 12 hours and eat 5,000 calories. I would like to continue writing but we are going to look at the working ladies on the corner.

Speeding is bad

We left Spokane, Wa. yesterday towards Seattle. We had the pleasure of meeting Officer Edwards as he was informing Scott that it is illegal to go 85mph towing a trailer through Washington ecspecialy since the speed limit was 75 (60 for trucks towing trailers). Scott got a $122.00 ticket! Ron and I went up in the Space Needle in Seattle, that was kinda cool. I drove from Seattle to Vancouver, BC. where we got a room at Holiday Inn for 2 nights. We crossed the border without any problems. Vancouver is a wild town - Scott and I were out until 3am (Scott didnt drink, hes still training).

Today we are gonna ride and rest. We will probably have a little fun tonight as well. No traveling today, tomorrow we leave for Whistler.

Here's to safe travels, and another outstanding day!!!!

Montana

We left the Twin Cities today and ended up in Miles City, Montana tonight. Everything is going great and on schedule as we head towards Whistler. Scott has a 5am road ride planned for tomorrow as he continues his training. I plan on riding with him when we get to Whistler. I brought a digital camera with so if everything works out I hope to post some pictures through out our trip. We gained 1 hour from changing time zones and will gain 1 more tomorrow so that helps. I'll post again tomorrow from our next destination.

I'm planning on racing Aug. 25th in the Murphy Mountain Bike 10K Sprint Series @ Murphy-Hanrehan Park Reserve. I did some of these races last year and they are very similar to the trails in the Chequamegon 40 which will be my first race when I get back from Canada.

My schedule looks good for the next few weeks, here are a few highlights:
Aug. 22 Valleyfair
Aug. 25 Murphy Sprint Race
Aug. 26 MN. State Fair
Aug. 27 - Sept. 10 Canada trip
Sept. 16 - 20 Cheq. 40 trip
Sept. 25 MNSCS Awards Party

Contacts

This year I started using one day disposable contacts when I ride/race my bike along with a pair of Rudy Project glasses. This set-up seems to work great and I dont risk the possibility of breaking my every day glasses in a crash. My only problem is that I intinaly started using Bausch & Lomb brand lenses and I seem to have alot of problems with them drying out and blurring my vision, causing me to have to slow down and blink a ton to clean them out. So not knowing if the contacts were the problem or if the glasses were causing the problem (they have small vents in the upper corners of the lenses to prevent fogging) I made an apt. with my eye doc last friday. He gave me 3 sets of a few different brands of daily disposable contacts to try and see if any of them worked better. Since I only wear contacts when biking or playing sports, the Welch race would be my first time trying one of the new pairs. I tried the 1-day Acuvue brand contact lens and they worked awesome. I didnt have to use any drops and if my vision got blurry, I only had to blink once and it cleared up. I'm curious if anyone reading this has any experience in this area. Thanks..

Metric Auto Parts Welch MTB Jam

Had a decent day today at Welch Village. Took 4th in the Singlespeed class and wrapped up 3rd overall in the series. Welch it a tough course on a SS, tons of climbing, seems like you can never rest. My race started at 11am and Melissa's started at 12:30 so chances were that I was going to miss her race. I finished just as the kids race started but I didn't see Melissa anywhere. Seems she had a melt down (as 4yr olds do) just before the start and decided she didn't want to race but then changed her mind back at the car but the race had already started. Oh well, there will be many more, hopefully. I will miss the 9th and final race of the MNSCS series but look forward to the awards party Sept. 25th at Quality Bicycle Products.

food

Having a convenience store has its perks. Working with our vendors I was able to get some goodies for our trip to Canada. I would like to give them there props here.

American Bottling Company - water and pop
Old Dutch Foods - chips and snacks
Metz Baking Company - bread, rolls and buns
Land O Lakes - milk, OJ, yogurt, etc.

Thanks again to the above companies for helping us out on our trip!

Metric Auto Parts Welch MTB Jam

This sunday is the 8th race in the MNSCS. This will be my last race of the series because I will be in Canada during the last race. Per the points rules, you can drop your 2 worst races so missing the last one won't affect my points standing. I'm currently 3rd in points in the Singlespeed class. Melissa will also be racing so that should be fun.

I have a couple weeks to get everything in order before leaving for Canada. Next week I'm going to Valleyfair with my wife and daughter so that should be fun. We are also going to the State Fair with Scott's family the day before leaving for Canada.

UPS dropped off a few more items we ordered for Canada today. We are expecting good things at the World Championships. We dialed a few things in at 4:30am today with the light systems and should be ready for some fast pit stops. Gravity lab is helping out with a vechile and trailer as well as other items.

12 hours @ Mt. Kato

Mike, Kraig and I woke up Saturday morning to rain, not good. We decided to get ready and leave for the race anyway since Mankato is only 45 minutes from my house. It continued to rain until about 7am so we set-up the EZup and got everything ready. The race was the 3rd of 3 races in the Triple Crank Classic race series put on by the BAM riders. They had 2 loops for the 12 hour race, each was 4.2 miles long. The "B" loop included the Luge, if your familiar with Mt. Kato. The first 3 laps were miserable, the course was very muddy, but as the day went on things improved and it was a great day. Because this race was part of a series, they had citizen, sport, and expert classes, although everyone rode together. All riders were solo competitors, no teams. I entered the citizen class because I am still new to the 12 hour races and decided to ride my Singlespeed. I completed 11 laps finishing 7th overall in the citizen class and 2nd in my age group. Kraig did 10 laps and finished 8th overall in the citizen class and 2nd in his age group (40-49). Mike only rode the first lap, the mud and the luge were enough for him, he pitted for us the rest of the day and finished in 25th place in the citizen class. The winning expert did 22 laps.

Quick update

I put in an order with Hammer Nutrition yesterday. I've done the research and have seen the results, time to try it for myself.

Going on a 2 hour ride tomorrow with Scott Cave at Lebanon Hills from 2-4.

Looks like I have everything ready for this Saturday. Kraig Anderson might join Mike and I at the race. Gravity Lab is helping us out with an EZ-up.

Next weekend will be my last MNSCS race of the year. I can possibly move into 2nd in series points or I'll end up 3rd (single speed). The race is at Welch Village Ski Area.

Scott, Ron (Scott's father-in-law), and I leave Aug. 27th for Whistler on a 2 week vacation. Scott is competing in the elite class at the 24 hour Solo World Championship.

Scott Cave - 12 hour of GEARS 1st Place

Scott and I had a great weekend. This was our final race in preparation for the 24 hour Solo World Championship in Canada. Scott was in a great battle with Brad Cole from Kansas and attacked while Brad was in the pits changing clothes. Brad gave in after not being able to catch Scott and waited for Scott to come around and rode with him the rest of the race finishing in 2nd place 1 lap down. Hammer and e-caps products were the final key to Scott's victory. I need to start working on my nutrition! I raced well in the 3 hour race doing 1 lap more than my goal but gave up several positions on the last lap because I ran out of gas and couldn't keep up the same pace. I think with better nutrition on my part I could have had a better finish.

Next weekend my brother Mike and I will be competing in a 12 hour solo race in Mankato. Mike is going for the fun of it and my goal is to do at least 12 laps on the Mt. Kato course. This will be more of a "fun" race with Mike and I having a good time together. I'm planning on picking up some Hammer and e-caps from Scott this week for the 12 hour challenge at Mt. Kato.

I'm planning on bringing a lap top computer with to Canada so I can update my blog and keep everyone posted the 2 weeks we are gone.
